Areas of Expertise and Surgical Procedures

Dr Sanders specialises in a wide range of surgical procedures, with a particular focus on endocrine surgery. She provides expert care for conditions affecting the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as general surgical conditions requiring intervention.

Endocrine Surgery

Endocrine Surgery

Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery

The thyroid and parathyroid glands play a critical role in regulating metabolism and calcium levels in the body. Disorders of these glands can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, muscle weakness, and abnormal calcium levels.

Thyroid surgery is required for conditions such as thyroid nodules, goitre, thyroid cancer, and some causes of hyperthyroidism that have not responded to medical treatment.

Parathyroid surgery is performed when patients have hyperparathyroidism, a condition caused by overactive parathyroid glands leading to high calcium levels, which can result in kidney stones, osteoporosis, and other complications.

Adrenal Gland Surgery

The adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, produce essential hormones that regulate stress responses, blood pressure, and metabolism. Surgery may be required for conditions such as adrenal tumours, adrenal hyperplasia, or Cushing’s syndrome.

Adrenalectomy (removal of one or both adrenal glands) is performed for hormone-producing tumours or cancerous growths that affect the body’s normal hormone balance.

General Surgery

Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy (also known as an upper endoscopy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. It is used to diagnose conditions such as ulcers, gastritis, and early-stage cancers. It may also identify the causes or complications of acid reflux. This procedure is performed using a thin, flexible tube with a camera, allowing for a detailed examination and biopsies if necessary.

Surgical Services

Hernias occur when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue. Common types include: Inguinal hernia (groin area) Umbilical hernia (near the belly button) Incisional hernia (at the site of a previous surgical incision)

Surgical repair involves reinforcing the weakened area with sutures or mesh to prevent recurrence and relieve discomfort.

Gallbladder Surgery (Cholecystectomy)

The gallbladder stores bile, which helps digest fats. Gallstones or inflammation can cause severe pain, nausea, and digestive issues. A cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal, is the most effective treatment for symptomatic gallstones and gallbladder disease.

Breast Surgery and Breast Disease Management

Dr Sanders provides expert evaluation and surgical treatment for various breast conditions, including: Breast lumps and cysts Breast infections and abscesses Evaluation and surgical management of benign and malignant breast tumours

Soft Tissue Tumours and Lipomas

Lipomas are non-cancerous fatty tumours that develop under the skin. While often harmless, they can cause discomfort or aesthetic concerns. Surgical removal is recommended for large, painful, or rapidly growing lipomas.

Lymph Node Biopsies

Lymph node biopsies are performed to diagnose infections, inflammatory conditions, or cancer. This procedure involves removing a lymph node or a small tissue sample for microscopic examination.
